Science Grade 5th
Classification of living Organisms
Unit No 1
Overview
Here you will learn the basic overview about classification of living organisms.
This is unit no one of book science 5th ajk text book board Muzaffarabad.
Habitats of some endangered animals have been
destructed for different purposes, putting the endangered Animals at more risk.
These habitats must be restored to
let the endangered animals increase their population.
Identify factors responsible for
extinction of endanger species
Key points
Living organisms are classified into five major groups: bacteria, algae, fungi, plants and animals.
Bacteria are prokaryotes and unicellular. Algae are eukaryotes. They may range from unicellular to
multicellular. Fungi are eukaryotes and saprophytes. Animals are heterotrophs while plants are
autotrophs.
On the basis of presence of backbone, animals are classified into two groups, i.e. invertebrates and vertebrates.
Vertebrates are classified into five classes: pisces, amphibia, reptilia, aves and mammalia.
Pisces are fish. Amphibians live both on land and in water while reptiles are jirst true land animals. Birds
fly in the air and lay eggs, whereas, most of the mammals give birth to young ones, and have hair on their
bodies.
Plants are classified into non-flowering andflowering plants.
Flowering plants produce flowers and seeds. They may be monocots and dicots.
Monocots have one cotyledon whereas, dicots have two cotyledons in their seeds.
Invertebrates are classified as sponges, worms, insects, snails and starjish.
Sponges have irregular bodies with no symmetry. Jellyfish show radial symmetry. Worms are soft bodied
animals with bilateral symmetry. Skin of starfish is covered with spines. Snails have soft bodies covered
with shells and have bilateral symmetry.
Biodiversity is the variation in all organisms existing on the earth.
Human activities such deforestation, pollution, water contamination, etc. are disturbing biodiversity.
There are some plants and animals in Pakistan which are endangered. We need to create awareness
among people for conservation of biodiversity.
